Contrary to what many people might believe, AI does not need better chips or nuclear power. Demand for AI is so high that the invisible hand will find a way to ensure AI has enough food to continue growing at such an astounding clip. No - AI needs a more ancient technology: an ethical operating system. Just as there is not one software operating system, so, too, there are a myriad of ethical operating systems - or simply schools of ethics. An amoral hyper-advanced artificial general intelligence is almost by definition the greatest threat to humanity imaginable. Getting AI to comply with a globally acceptable ethical operating system - almost like Uniform Commercial Code - will be one of the biggest and most rewarding challenges of our lifetime. Let this post be a call for all politically-inclined, activist-minded ethical philosophers to rise and take action. Now is our time to shine.
